Meg Ross is cooler than your average entrepreneur. When we hopped on the phone last week, I was surprised to hear the real story behind The Nooky Box, the line of sex positive subscription boxes she created in Montana. Meg wants to change America through sex education. Selling a product to gain the capital is just the first step.
I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Below is an edited recap of our discussion.
Let’s talk about beer and sex. I hear you have a history with both!
When I moved back to Montana five years ago, the plan was to start a brewery with my father. A few weeks into the project, I knew my heart wasn’t in it. Simply, beer wasn’t my passion. But conversations about sex always were. Let me explain.
Sex is one of the most natural instincts a person has and so many people feel like talking about is taboo or shameful. This has got to change!
I have always been the friend that others confide in and ask advice about their relationships and sex life. I like being this person for my friends because I enjoyed talking about it and never felt like it was awkward or uncomfortable, and I want everyone to have that feeling of being sexually confident and secure.
So, it’s really no surprise you started the Nooky Box! With a mission to bust taboos, it all makes sense.
Exactly. I started the Nooky Box to change the way America talks about sex. It’s a huge goal, but my dream goes way beyond the box.
Oooh. Tell me more!
Our dream is to create an educational platform. We want to be a resource for people to go to talk about sex. Education is the best way to overcome insecurities and empower people to make better sexual health choices. We work hard to create thoughtful content around the products in our boxes, but we’re excited to expand beyond that some day.
Rad. I completely agree. It’s not just the products themselves – but the conversations we can start around them – that have the potential for major impact. It sounds like you’ve always been made for this industry. Are you ever surprised by where your career has led you?
There are two pieces to my industry: sex toys and subscriptions. I am not surprised to be in the sex toy industry. I’ve always been interested in relationships and people, and to me, sex is the natural connection between the two.
It’s the subscription box industry I never expected to be in. I wanted to jump head into our educational platform, but I realized such an effort would need a foundation. The subscription box creates trust for our brand and builds a sex-positive audience around our mission. I’ve been fortunate enough to know founders of other subscription boxes who have shared their advice and challenges with me. That’s been extremely beneficial, and I’ve also made some close friends because of it.
I feel you. When I’m challenged by this industry, it’s the people working toward the same world that provide major inspiration.
Okay, let’s talk about your box. What’s it like to open one for the first time?
Opening a Nooky Box is like opening a birthday present every three months. You don’t always know what you’re going to get or how you can use the products. It’s an experience that you get to share with your partner – deciding together when you want to use them – so it’s fun to think about how those conversations go with couples.
Our subscription box always has a theme so the products all work together. It’s a total experience, plus there are always some surprises in the box too.
Sweet. I hear there’s a new line of signature boxes. How can we get our hands on them?
Yes, we have a new line of signature boxes! They just launched on Indiegogo.
Perfect. I love witnessing Nooky’s evolution. What’s the most important message you can send to customers?
To explore! Find out what you enjoy, what your partner enjoys, so sex can be the most enjoyable it can be. Open communication is key! And to ask questions, be open to learning and understanding what you want and don’t want. No one else can decide that for you and there is no one magic formula so never feel pressured into feeling like what someone else likes is what you should enjoy. You’re not broken.
PREACH. From my experience in this industry, I know it’s not all condoms and glitter. How do you repel f*ckboys? ie the haters
With love and understanding! Some people don’t understand our mission, which is to help people explore their sexuality and change the conversation around sex. The haters usually come around and actually end up being fans once they hear about what we’re are really all about! I really just don’t let them get under my skin or judge them for their views. Everyone is different and we have to give people the space to be who they are, this isn’t a cult, we don’t need to talk someone into loving us. They will or they won’t.
Amazing. Thanks for the inspo to keep calm in the face of fuckboys. Here’s a question I always ask: How do you balance work and wellness? It’s not easy to run a business and a life.
I make sure to always take some time for myself, even when it gets hectic! Like right now, with this campaign. I have to carve time out of the day for me, but it’s important that I do. Spending some time every day outside also helps me tremendously! We’re based out of Montana so there is always somewhere new to get out and hike, fish or snowboard!
Rocking. I love Montana! Thank you for sharing your love with us, Meg. Nooky Box is such a fun product, and we are honored to have Lovability Condoms and products featured in three of your boxes.
