Ever run the faucet over your lady parts to get off? It’s a #classicteenmove I personally didn’t discover until a bit later in life. Poor shame! Natural pleasure is as good as it gets – and running soft water down your shaft (yes, women have clit shafts) – is as good as anything gets. When I discovered a sex toy inspired by most teen’s first masturbation experience (called the water slyde!!!), I HAD to meet the woman behind the project.
Meet Maureen Pollack, the inventor of the Water Slyde. Her product is as genius as she is, and her vision for a slippery, pleasurable future is damn fresh. Peek in on our conversation below!
Alright, let’s dive right in. Tell me more about what you’ve created.
The WaterSlyde is a revolutionary female pleasure product and hygiene device. It is a sleek plastic water diverter that simply attaches to most forward facing bathtub spouts. The water flow is easily directed to the midline of the bathtub, allowing the water to land in the most delightful way. Some women use it for hygiene, some for pleasure, and some for both.
Love the dual uses! So creative and so grounded at the same time. Where did this idea come from?
It was a beautiful accident. When I was a teenager, while in the bathtub, I reached for the faucet to help sit up and it popped off. Behind the faucet was a pipe shooting the water straight out. The water began spraying me in the face, so I quickly jumped back, and it began spraying me in another place. Let’s say I took about 4 baths a day until my father fixed it. Looking for a similar experience, I began scooting under the faucet AKA doing the “bathtub technique.”
For the next 15 years, I thought about how cool it would be if the water could somehow come to me so I wouldn’t have to deal with the uncomfortable scooting and messing up my hair.
As an entrepreneur, I know process is everything, and it’s easier said than done to create a new product by yourself. How did you get Water Slyde to market? Tell me about the journey.
It started with the motivation. After mentioning the concept of The WaterSlyde to my OBGYN, her response was, “Now that’s something I would invest in!” I immediately called a patent attorney and received the green light. Then the real fun began. I attempted to make prototypes using different materials found at local stores, failing each time. Then a good friend helped me design it using a 3D printer. I sent the CAD file to be printed and made a few adjustments. I tried it and loved it (many times, you know for research). Then 20 women tested The Water Slyde and after each one either wouldn’t give it back or wanted to buy one, we knew we had something special. Finally, I met with an injection molding factory to mass produce The WaterSlyde in the final pretty translucent pink.
Dope! How long did it take?
From “go time” to the first WaterSlyde sold, it took a little less than a year.
Your website is pretty low profile about the sexual nature of your product. Do you think your customers are more drawn to a product that’s less explicit?
We are marketing to all women who are looking for another way to feel good. Our clients include grandmas, doctors, and pornstars alike. We want to include women who may be a little more discreet. And let’s face it, women have a sexy imagination, they get it.
Let’s talk about pleasure. How easy is it to work in this industry?
We find it easy, it’s others who sometimes have a difficult time working in it. We like to think that we are more modest in our marketing and packaging. However, some companies like, well, let’s just say that start with an F and end with acebook have policies in place to not allow us to promote our ads because they have the word “pleasure’. In turn, other marketing companies may be begging for our business and when we go to sign they have to pull out because they have a contract with FB. We want to change the industry and how it’s viewed. There is nothing inherently “wrong” with pleasure. And people constantly surprise me how supportive they are. We live in an amazing time to be a woman and it just keeps getting better.
Agreed!! Okay, what do you want your customers to know about masturbation?
I could go on and on about the amazing benefits to masturbating. But some things that come up in conversation is that it’s not just okay (guilt free), but that it’s healthy. I love to promote couples to be together. For my lady friends, self stimulation actually helps increase the libido and can help you have better orgasms.
Do you get any ridiculous FAQ’s?
Sorry if you’re reading this and this was your first question… here is a common silly question asked be men, ‘It’s so big, how do you get it in?” Really?! Not everything has to be inserted to feel good. It’s just a water diverter dude, the water lands on the clitoris, you know, that thing you’re supposed to pay a lot of attention to.
Alright, what do people first think when they see a Water Slyde? Is it ever mistaken for other products? I have a theory that people see and hear what they want to and what they are most used to seeing and hearing. People tend to see Lovability as a lip balm or mint. Even when I say “condom,” they’ll hear “condo.” Interesting how our psychology works!
Haha, yes! At one of our trade shows we put it out on the table and asked people to guess what it was. If they guessed correctly with in 3 tries it was theirs. 1 brilliant lady won. Some of the other guesses: shoehorn, water balloon launcher, a knee brace, wine poorer (which I had to try), and a jai laie stick, etc…
You stay busy! How do you run a business, run a family, and run your life? How do you balance work and wellness?
Two words: dedication and compartmentalization. I enjoy and feel very blessed to have each of those parts in my life. When it’s the “time” to do one segment, that is what I am 100% focused on. I love the term Mom-preneur. I’m a stay-at-home mom who is really involved with my kids’ lives and I get to be an entrepreneur as well. I know that I can’t make this a Fortune 500 company overnight. I just have to take it as it comes (hehe).
What’s next, yo?! I’m excited!
We have a few more tricks up our sleeve. WaterSlyde has been on the market for over a year, and we’re excited for what’s coming…People can follow us on instagram, twitter, and facebook @TheWaterSlyde to be in the know.
